Crossover Comparison: The 2019 Terrain vs 2019 Acadia

By Emily Eppley | August 31st, 2018

GMC offers luxurious cabins, reliable capability, and a host of helpful amenities in every vehicle. So when you’re looking for a quality family hauler, it’s easy to feel torn between GMC’s available crossovers, including the three-row 2019 GMC Acadia and the nimble 2019 GMC Terrain.

Check out at the differences between these comfortable crossovers to find out which one will suit you best. They each have their advantages. Do you want the agility of a smaller, two-row vehicle, or do you need the extra cargo room you can find in a three-row?

Exterior

You can find handsome stylings on the Terrain and the Acadia, starting with aggressive grilles that matches their brawny stances. The sporty, youthful LED signature headlights match the LED taillights. From the side, 17-inch wheels add to the sporty feel of these crossovers.

Both vehicles have an available Black Edition that includes upgraded wheels, black grille inserts, light details, mirror caps, and more. The Terrain also has an optional Chrome Package that targets the same details but coats them in chrome for a flashier look.

There are clear differences in dimensions, though. The GMC Terrain is 182.3 inches in length with a 107.3-inch wheelbase. The Acadia is a little larger at 193.6 inches long and with a 112.5-inch wheelbase.

2019 GMC Terrain Advantages:

  • Additional style packages
  • Smaller footprint for better maneuverability
  • Weighs less for more agility

2019 GMC Acadia Advantages:

  • Longer wheelbase
  • More cargo capacity

Interior

Inside the GMC Acadia and Terrain are available luxurious amenities to make your drive comfortable and convenient.

The center console offers pass-through under storage and a covered compartment to keep valuables safe. On the dash, you’ll stay connected with the 7- and 8-inch touchscreen that offer smartphone connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Keep things comfortable with the dual-zone climate control in the Terrain and tri-zone in the Acadia, and the available heated steering wheel and heated seats in both models.

The midsize Acadia offers three rows of seating for up to seven passengers with smart storage behind the third row. It has spacious seats, plenty of elbow room with only two seats in the second row, and covered in-floor storage in the cargo area. Fold the second- and third-row seats for 79 cubic feet of cargo space, fold just the third row for 41.7 cubes behind the second row, or keep all seats upright for 12.8 cubic feet of space.

The smaller Terrain seats five passengers in two rows. With all the seats upright, there is 29.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and it grows to 63.3 cubic feet when you fold down the second-row. Fold the front passenger seat and passenger side of the 40/60 split second row to accommodate items up to 8 feet long.

Headroom and second-row legroom are basically the same between these two. The Acadia offers 40.3 inches of headroom to the Terrain’s 40 inches. The second row is exactly the same at 39.7 inches of legroom in both, but the Acadia has slightly more hip room at 53.3 inches to the 51.8 inches in the Terrain. The third-row seats in the Acadia are for shorter-legged people with only 31.1 inches of legroom.

2019 GMC Terrain Advantages:

  • Accommodates longer items
  • Roominess beyond its small footprint

2019 GMC Acadia Advantages:

  • Seating for seven
  • Three rows of seating
  • Covered storage in the hatch

The 2019 Terrain has a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque and pairs to a nine-speed transmission. Bump up to the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque with the same gearbox. If you’re ready to switch to diesel, try the 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine for 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed transmission.
